Our products and services are provided to assist our clients with personal change. We do not diagnose medical conditions, mental illness, or physical ailments, or provide health care treatments for such conditions.
Hypnosis is an altered mental state characterized by deep relaxation, focused attention, and openness to suggestion. It is not some variety of sleep. Hypnotized people maintain an awareness of everything in their environments. They usually remember every word that is said to them and everything that they do while hypnotized. "Hypnotism" is the study or act of inducing hypnosis. "Hypnotherapy" is a treatment program for achieving a client's goals through hypnosis.
You have probably experienced hypnosis on a regular basis without realizing it. Every day our states of consciousness fluctuate in response to our needs and the environment around us. For example, when you are seriously engrossed in a book or movie, your awareness of the environment around you may fade as you concentrate on the storyline and its characters. You can still hear cars passing and the neighbors' dog barking; but your attention is sharply focused on another realm.
Changes in our mental activities produce different electrical patterns in our brains. These patterns have been classified by psychologists into the following categories:
- The Beta State — Our normal level of conscious thought and awareness (brain waves @ 13–30 cycles/second)
- The Alpha State — A relaxed, creative, and imaginative light trance state in which most hypnotherapy takes place (brain waves @ 8–12 cycles/second)
- The Theta State — A dream-like state of deep relaxation and internally focused attention normally experienced while falling asleep, waking from sleep, and during deep hypnosis (brain waves @ 4–7 cycles/second)
- The Delta State — Deep sleep, with only minimal awareness of external stimuli (brain waves @ 2–3 cycles/second)
Real hypnosis bears little resemblance to what you may have seen in the movies or on television. We know that real spies are nothing like James Bond. We know that real policemen are nothing like Dirty Harry. Why would we get our ideas about hypnosis from fiction?

At ThetaWorks we believe that hypnosis is the optimal tool for quick and painless behavioral and emotional change. We do not conduct sessions involving temporal regression or recommend the use of hypnosis in the recovery of traumatic memories. For personal changes requiring the exploration of childhood issues, clients should seek a long term relationship with a clinical psychologist.
